FamilyMart signals slow down in Chinese expansion

FamilyMart has signalled a slow down in its Chinese expansion. The chain is attributing its move to the economic slowdown and not to recent problems in Sino-Japanese relations.

The convenience store chain said Thursday it will open 1,161 outlets in China by the end of February, down from 1,227. The company had 813 stores in China as of the end of February.

It has not modified its plan to increase the number of stores to 4,500 by the end of February 2016.

FamilyMart recently temporarily suspended operations at some of its Chinese stores as a result of anti-Japanese riots. The stores are now fully opened again and the company says it has not experienced any decline in sales.
