AU: Coles website shows 96% produce domestically grown

Coles has been revealing on its website the extent to which it relies on imported fruits and vegetables to maintain its supplies during seasonal shortages.

96% of its produce is home grown as it turns out, though a survey recently conducted shows that 47% of customers wrongly believe that they are purchasing food from overseas.

Coles is keen to dispel such a myth, hence the website information.

Coles fresh produce and bakery general manager Greg Davis said only 4 per cent of fresh fruit and veg was imported.

"We will always buy Australian if it is in season and the right quality and in sufficient stock," Mr Davis said.

The website says garlic comes from China, Argentina, Spain or Mexico from September to November, and from local and foreign growers in other months.

American lemons are stocked from November to February. Kiwifruit comes from France, Italy or New Zealand from July to February.
