Strawberries connected to Germany's worst food borne illness

Towards the end of September people in the Eastern states of Germany started to report symptoms that have now become associated with a food borne illness.

It took a week to ascertain that the illness was most likely connected to strawberries that originated in China. By that time thousands of people were suffering with gastroenteritis.

Most people got through the illness relatively quickly, but 32 were hospitalised. Over 11,000 people in total became ill - the largest ever food borne illness outbreak to hit Germany.

The strawberries were frozen and intended for use in desserts, mainly in schools. The fruits contained noroviruses which are particularly resilient when faced with cold and heat, thus they survived the thawing and cooking processes.
