Belgian courgette growers feel pressure from Spain

The Belgian season for greenhouse vegetables is still on-going, but smaller volumes are already coming in from Spain. Benny Cuypers from Lava (the cooperation of five major auctions) says growers are starting to feel the pressure.

“Prices of aubergines were variable this season,” he says, “but now there is a steady climb. They hover around the 1.40 Euro mark, which is normal for the time of the year. There is some produce coming in from Spain, but nothing to get upset about.”

“Courgettes however, are a different matter entirely. Production is down, and the market is starting to notice courgettes of Spanish origin. Notable volumes are flooding in. Prices are about 25 to 30 Euro cents apiece, and let’s face it: that is meagre! I have the strong impression this is due to the produce from Spain. I expect this trend to sustain in the weeks to come.”
