France: increase fruit and vegetable prices

The fruit and vegetable prices compared to prices during the summer of 2011 have increased by 5% and 3% respectively. Consequently prices are close to those of 2010. This according to Observatoire de Familles Rurales, which compares selling prices on behalf of the consumer.

In 2011 prices showed a considerable decrease. Especially for nectarines (+20%), peaches (+18%), lettuce (+18%) and cherries (+17%) prices have increased. Prices for strawberries and apricots have decreased, however, with -13% and -12% respectively.

A panel of the Observatoire de Familles Rurales has both in the weeks of 11 July and 16 July bought one kilo of 8 vegetable and fruit varieties from all kinds of selling places in 37 departments. It became clear that the consumer was best served in financial terms, when this fruit and vegetables were bought at the hard discount. A kilo of both 8 vegetables and fruit varieties cost Euro 38,00 at the hard discount, at super- and hypermarkets Euro 48,65 and at the market Euro 51,30.

The Observatoire de Familles Rurales also investigated the difference between normal and organic fruit and vegetables. It became clear that the average price of one kilo of organic fruit was Euro 5,39 in 2012, 11% lower than in 2011. Then a kilo
of organic fruit cost Euro 6,08. The difference in price between 2011 and 2012 for a kilo of organic vegetables is about the same at Euro 3,32 in 2012 and Euro 3,35 in 2011.
Especially the prices for strawberries, aubergines and peppers are much lower. The price for pears, lettuce, nectarines and melons has increased considerably, however.

Furthermore Observatoire de Familles Rurales came to the conclusion, that the average price for organic fruit is 62% higher in general than for conventional fruit and that this is 75,6% for vegetables.
