Switzerland: Migros starts project for ecological transport

Swiss retailer Migros started with the UKV project this week, which stands for 'unaccompanied combined traffic', from the Swiss Plateau in the direction of East-Switzerland. The purpose of this Migros project is to minimise CO2 emissions from truck transport by eight percent by 2020. While at the same time, it increases the transport capacity by 10 percent. The first SBB Cargo train with containers for Migros from East-Switzerland arrived in Gossau Monday morning.

Efficient and environmentally friendly transport is a central theme by Migros. The UKV project is leading when it comes to sustainability. UKV makes it easier to transfer goods from the train to the trucks due to the use of flexible switching containers. This way, long distance transport can travel by train and then make an easy switch to trucks for final delivery to the stores. It increases energy efficiency by allowing most of the transport to go by train which uses less energy than kilometers with a truck.
