Comment by Giuseppe Scarfone of Fruit Modena Group

Limited availability and no outstanding quality for Italian pears

The harvest of Italian pears for the 2012/13 season is about to finish and, according to Giuseppe Scarfone, Export Manager of Fruit Modena Group (FMG), a leader in Europe for the production and marketing of this fruit, the current one is "one of the most unpredictable and unexpected seasons which has occurred in our production area of relevance. "Contrary to what one might expect (see previous news), the current season is very complicated because of the limited quantities reported and the low quality of the fruit".

Yet this situation has affected not only Italy but also other European pear producing countries such as as Portugal, Belgium, Holland and Spain, where the estimated production drops by around 20-30% compared to the previous season with occasional quality problems, such as the high level of rust on Portuguese pears.

Conference.

"With regard to the production of FMG 2012 - Giuseppe Scarfone says - we record important declines, up to 20% on some varieties. The decrease is mainly dictated by the poor calibers and low weights."

"The unfavorable weather back in July, with drought and high temperatures has slowed considerably the regular fruit growth."

A season characterized, therefore, by medium to small fruits, especially for the summer and early winter varieties such as Conference and Decana. The exception, in part, is the main variety Abate Fetel that could benefit from the more moderate temperatures and rainfall of the last period of growth and reached important calibers and excellent quality levels: only 20% of the product is lower than the caliber 65 mm. The total harvest is in any case lower than expected in terms of total quantities.

Quality
"As mentioned, it is not an excellent year in terms of quality - Giuseppe Scarfone says - mainly due to some problems of the external appearance, as scarring from the branches or hail, which are most evident on the "smooth-skinned" varieties, i.e. without rust, as Green William, Red William and Decana. Russeting is mostly regular, tending to the abundant, only on the typical varieties for this feature as Abate Fetel, Conference and A.Kaiser."

On the other hand a high average level of sugars of all productions has been recorded: the 2012/13 Italian pear will certainly get a very high rating from the final consumer.

William.

Market
"Initially, the market opened with good price indications, perhaps influenced by the law of supply and demand" transactions on the markets for summer varieties seemed to resist the concerns related to the high prices and we hope that the trend will continue throughout the marketing season of winter varieties."
