So far this year, exports of chilli have presented a decrease of 18% compared to last year. Similarly, the outlook for 2013 is complicated, as stated by the chairman of Capsicum, of the Exporters Association (ADEX), Jorge Chepote.
He indicated that the drop in shipments was mainly due to two factors: First, the international crisis that the United States and Europe are facing. Spain is especially affected. It is the largest buyer and because of this situation, has generated fewer orders.
The second reason is that buyers, our customers, are waiting for the Chinese chilli harvest, during the last quarter of the year.
"China (Peru's main competitor in the export of this product), is planting 20% more chillies than last year. In 2011 they have made us suffer a bit, especially on the issue of price, now with more supply, it is generating a headache," said Jorge Chepote.
