According to Juan Varilias, chairman of Adex (the Union of Exporters), Peru exported 97 million dollars’ worth of organic produce in the first semester of 2012. This number is a little higher than the same period in 2011, when importers ran up a tab of 95 million dollars.
During the opening of the fifth annual International Convention of Organic Produce, sector representatives stated that a lot more success is to be expected from the export trade. “Some of our markets include Canada, Holland, Finland and the United Arab Emirates. This market has gone up with 10% globally,” says Varilias.
The chairman of Adex went on to say that, in this semester, the shipments of organic bananas took up the lion’s share with 41 million dollar, followed by organic coffee with 24 million and cacao with 11 million US dollars. Other outstanding performers were the jojoba and the quinoa.
Juan Varilias was pleased to introduce products like the camu camu, the mango, the grape and even trout as part of the organic arsenal.
