Theo Jegerings, Langfruit:

"Netherlands: "Forgotten vegetables from olden days are the vegetables for now!"

A few years ago in Limburg an initiative was started to bring back old-timer vegetable varieties. Up to today Langfruit has an important share in the development, cultivation and sales of these vegetables. "Many of these special varieties have been eaten by our ancestors for centuries. Sometimes as a result of bitter necessity, because there was no alternative, sometimes because some products were just too tasty. The products, especially those which are very tasty, are being eaten again. The supply of type and varieties of the forgotten vegetables is enormous and undoubtedly will increase during the coming years," explains Theo Jegerings.

"Many of these beautiful products have been embraced by culinary Netherlands and the consumer. Because of their love for the product and the search for local product we were in a position to make these products popular again. One does not need unnatural ingredients to get colour and taste on the plate," Theo continues.

"Forgotten vegetables are different from other vegetables in many respects. The products in general differ from the standard product because they look different. In addition they often have a surprising colour, smell and taste. In small quantities the tasty varieties are added again to the assortment of the supermarket. Are we really going back to the past a little?

"Langfruit has of its own growers product available, which is offered in a small nostalgic crate. The products which can be offered by Langfruit from their own growers at the moment are Deep-Purple, Purple Haze, White Satin and Mello Yello carrots, carrot parsley, parsnips and black salsify and the yellow and white Chiogga and primal beetroot, which we call beetroot. Furthermore in small quantities Cavallo Nero and Minestra Nera are also available. A very nice product is also the red Mais (maize) of the midi-type, which will be harvested during the coming weeks. As a first we may tell you that investments are taking place in a cooperation, in which the combination of tasty forgotten vegetables and ease of preparation are perfectly combined," Theo concludes.
