De Groot International: first Chinese pomelos shipped
30% less pomelos available for export to Europe
The pomelo season in the Chinese Pinghe County has started again and De Groot International is busy getting this citrus fruit to Holland under the house brand Don Mario. The first containers were shipped last week. Visits to the suppliers and plantations in China showed that the pomelos are of very good quality at the start of this season. The conversations with the suppliers have also meant that everyone knows about the MRL demands from Europe. Not just the farmers on the various plantations have been informed, but the pomelos are being divided per plantation. Pomelos from each plantation are being checked for MRLs before being exported.
The strict MRL demands from Europe combined with unfavourable weather conditions on the plantations in Pinghe have meant that there will be 30% less pomelos available this year for the export to Europe. A lot of rain has fallen in Pinghe County in the last few weeks, which means the pomelos were taken off the field later. This made the start of the season a few weeks later compared to other years.
De Groot International has consciously chosen to start the season with the Honey Pomelo from the region Pinghe. These pomelos are a few weeks later than pomelos from the production area Guangdong. The big difference is that the quality and taste is many times better than that of the 'Guangdong' Pomelo. Besides the difference in taste the 'Guangdong' pomelos also have more seeds. The first Pinghe pomelos will be available at De Groot International around week 40.
