Netherlands: “Consumer-oriented thinking still in infancy in frozen food sector”

In May 2012 Hennie van Es started Com Freeze, a company trading in frozen foods. The consumption of frozen food is relatively low in Holland, when compared to surrounding countries. “It’s actually less than 5%,” says Van Es. “So a lot of work needs to be done there. Consumer-oriented thinking is still in infancy in the frozen food sector.”

For now, Com Freeze is mostly operational in the processed fruit manufacturing. Hennie’s passion is in the more exotic varietyies. His buyers are mainly manufacturers of chilled juices with added flavours. “I like being involved in coming up with new exotic flavours,” he says.

Com Freeze sees itself as the link between supplier and end product. “We like to make the chain a little more clear, add to traceability and food safety. Right now, we are working with a producer in Central America who supplies us with exotic fruits, and who helps us with the handling process. Other partners are in Chile, Thailand and Turkey. We keep close tabs on our transactions.”

With this network, as well as his twenty years of experience, Van Es hopes to make a major contribution to the frozen food industry. For the moment, he is still targeting manufacturers, “but within a few years we hope to cater patrons of supermarkets.”
