Italy: Average retail price of 1 euro /kg for potatoes
The Northern Europe Potato Growers organization (NEPG) updated the data on areas under cultivation in 2012. In Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany and the United Kingdom is confirmed the decline in overall investment, -5.9% in production compared to last year. The largest decreases were registered in Germany, with -9.2% compared to 2011, and in Belgium, Holland and England with reductions in areas under production of more than 5% over the previous season.
The price of potatoes for processing showed a steady upward trend in the European markets caused by a lower product availability in Northern Europe. In particular, the product demand from the British processing industry is determining average prices of potatoes for industrial processing between € 0.15 and € 0.18 in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, England and Germany.
The Italian market has registered, at the beginning of September, a regular pattern of sales at the stores and in major wholesale markets of the peninsula. We note also promotional activities by different groups of store chains. The price of the product is basically stable.
From various investigations carried out on the average retail price in Italy, in the week 37 of September 2012, the average selling price per kilo of potatoes was €1.00 at the store in northern Italy, € 1.00 in central Italy and € 0.95 in southern Italy: the average retail price of potatoes found in Italy is € 1.00 per kg.
