Mexico: The strawberry surface is recovering in the Zamora Valley

Little by little and thanks to the implementation of better technology, the strawberry surface in Zamora Valley has been recovering. Last year 4,200 hectares were planted, and this year an average of 4,500 hectares are planned, according to the head of the 88 Rural Development District of Sagarpa.

Jesus GamiƱo Moreno said some farmers began to plant strawberries last July, so to have possibilities of an earlier harvest, while others, the majority, decided to plant in August and in early September, as it is traditionally done.

Of the total surface for planting, it is expected that at least 3,500 hectares will have
macro tunnels, while specifying that the aim is to cover all the surface, but some producers did not have sufficient resources to establish these systems.

He explained that this results in greater benefits such as an increased production of strawberries, obtain higher quality and with better hygiene, which also opens the possibility of expanding to foreign markets.
