Netherlands: Frukar start Spanish citrus season

Frukar have started the Spanish citrus season again. From today the importer in Barendrecht has plenty of mandarins from Spain available, which will be sold again under the well-known trademarks such as Genesis, Serena, Pardo, Picolito, Adrealine, New Style, Stephanie etc. "This season the volume, as it appears to be now, will be comparable to last season. Also the quality and sizes look good," Willem Koole says. The first oranges are expected in the beginning of October. The expectation is that the supply of oranges will be 25% smaller than last season. Round about that time the first Spanish lemons are also expected and that harvest is expected to be 15% smaller than last season.

"Many cooperatives and warehouses are closed because of the economic situation in Spain. Many companies have closed down out of necessity, only because of expenses which were too high and of insufficient return from fruit, to be able to pay all expenses," the importer continues. "Therefore it is still an open question how much fruit will come to the market. This will all be dependent on the market situation. If this remains suppressed then it will now be said quicker by the warehouses, which are still open, that they cannot continue, because prices are too low. This did not happen much before in a market, which sometimes was over-supplied. Therefore we will have to wait what will happen this season. We are positive and hope for a good citrus season for everybody!"
