Swedish potato growers expect average harvest

For the potato producers in Switzerland, it seems that the potato harvest this year will be average. The yield of ware potatoes is currently 369 kg this is 4% below the average of the past five years, reported Swisspatat in a press release. In 2009 and 2011 there was talk of a big harvest, which means this year's harvest can be seen as a average.

The yield of organic potatoes this year is however well below that of recent years. With 183 kg per acre this is 17.4% below the five year average. The reason for this is late blight, which has occurred because of the wet weather.

In total, a potato harvest of 452,200 tons was counted. Last year the potato crop was 515,000 tons so large that this exceeded demand. So much that a lot of potatoes had to be used as animal feed.
