Mexico: Fears lime price drop

In addition to the Diaphorina plague (vector that causes HLB or Yellow Dragon), the lime production in the Huimanguillense savannah region in Mexico, suffered a downturn due to the price drop. For two years now lime producers have been
receiving 25 pesos per box, in recent months the box was quoted up to 5 pesos, which is the lowest price paid so far.

Carlos Antonio Herrera González, president of the Association of Citrus Growers La Esperanza, recalled that before these two recent years, the price of the box of lime was up to 300 pesos (each box has 26 kilograms of fruit), but now with the price of 25 pesos, the product does not reach one peso per kilogram.

This causes the area growers to prefer to sell their products to the middlemen buyers in order to save at least the freight, or even stop the harvest. Although, production has been considered good, without a market and price, the producer loses profits.
