Processing factories at full capacity

Portugal: Unexpected increase in tomato productivity

According to the general secretary of the Tomato Industry Association (AIT), Miguel Cambezes, the tomato processing factories are working "at their full capacity" due to an "unexpected increase in productivity."

The secretary said that profitability is above the average for Portugal, situated at 85 to 90 tonnes per hectare. This year more than 100 tonnes per hectare are being produced.

The AIT official admitted that productivity above the contractual expectations between industry and producers may reflect in the management and organization of the campaign, to ensure, above all, that it will have no major consequences.

"The factories are working at their full capacity to meet the growers' interests and are doing everything they can to ensure processing is done as quickly as possible," he said.
