Competing with Argentina

Chile and Europe exporting cheaper apples and pears to Brazil

"Apple and pear exports are currently leaving Chile and Europe for Brazil. Pears are entering the Brazilian market with lower shipping costs, and consequently, they are competing fiercely with fruit from Patagonia, Argentina.

Barriers to imports caused by slowness in licensing and the strong competition from Europe and Chile are having a negative effect on Argentinian exports. Moreover, we are not seeing a very dynamic fruit market," said the manager of CAFI, Lic, Marcelo Loyarte.

According to Loyarte, "Chilean apples are arriving in Brazil with better prices. In some cases, transactions could not be made due to exporters being left out of stock and others having issues with quality. This offered Chile an opportunity which they made good use of, although it should be noted that fruit demand is lower than other years," he affirmed.
