Difficult season for Greek grape producers

The Greek grape season started around the 5th August, one week earlier than normal. The growing season has not been without its problems this year though, a long period of hot weather followed by 2 rains and wind has left Greek grape production with a lot of small sizes to contend with.

George Frangistas from Greek exporting company Gefra, explained, "The temperature stayed between 35-40 degrees for the 5 week period from mid July until the last week of August. This stressed the plants causing them to stop growing, over all quality is good, just the sizes are a bit on the small side."

According to Frangistas who's company exports Thompson Seedless, this will not really have an effect on the export market, "due to the crisis in Greece there is not much of a domestic market left so we have enough to fill export orders to the specifications expected. It means extra work in sorting and selection of the right fruit. Also the storage times will be shorter, so we will have to plan harvesting times very carefully."

The season's end will be a bit weather dependent and also subject to storage facilities for various exporters. Gefra plan to continue with export up until the 2nd or 3rd week of October.
