The export of Spanish fresh produce to the US in the first semester of 2012 has decreased by 11% compared to last year, representing a total of 10,590 tons. The decrease continues a trend of declining export to the Americas. The same period shows a 17% drop in export value: a total of 11 million Euro. The Transatlantic distribution of fruit has dropped to 9,511 tons, the shipments of vegetables amounted to 1,079 tons, or a 14% drop.
2011 was already a relatively miserable year, showing a considerable decline in outgoing shipments to the US. A total of 57,415 tons was shipped, 11% less than in the preceding year. The decline of fresh produce to the US affects not only Spain. The total export volume to the States dwindled, from 115,825 tons in 2010 to 113,082 tons in 2011.
The declining trade comes at a time when the EU is aiming for a free trade agreement between Spain and the US. Delegates of both nations have agreed to a basic outline for coming negotiations, which will likely take place next year. A bilateral summit will decide on the possibility of such a treaty.
