Spain: Canary Islands reducing fruit and vegetable exports

During the 2011-2012 campaign (running from July last year to June this year), the Canary Islands exported four tonnes of agricultural products less than a year earlier, according to data from the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (Istac).

During the 2010-2011 campaign, 128,928.88 tonnes were exported, but in 2011-2012 the amount has decreased to 124,982.89 tonnes. By provinces, both of them registered lower figures, but Las Palmas is the one exporting the most, with 96,993 tonnes this season compared to the 27,989 registered by Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

103,675 tonnes of tomatoes have been exported.

By products, tomato exports decreased, while cucumbers increased.

Between July 2011 and June 2012, 103,675.20 tonnes of tomatoes were exported, compared to the 110,335.58 from the previous campaign. By provinces, Las Palmas traded the greatest amount; 75,685.98 tonnes, compared to the 27,989.23 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There was also a decrease in the exports of the cherry variety, which are only shipped from the Eastern province, with 162.22 tonnes this campaign compared to the 182.57 from the previous one.

Las Palmas also handles most of the cucumber exports, with 21,059.25 tonnes this year, compared to the 18,370.63 from last year.

As for bananas, last July 14,960.91 tonnes were exported from the Islands, compared to the 17,113.53 from the same period in 2011. Last month not even one tonne was shipped overseas, compared to the 16.85 tonnes from July 2011, as all of the fruit went to the Peninsula instead.
