Greece: Makedoniki doing well in spite of country's economic troubles
“We're concerned with the standard of living,” said Loizos Symeou, export manager for Makedoniki. “In general, the standard of living is getting lower, and this affects consumption.” Consumers with less money is an obvious worry, but through its 35 years of business, Makedoniki has managed to remain one of the leading suppliers of fruits and vegetables for the retail and food service industries. Part of that success is due to their commitment to research and development.
“Right now, we aim to develop more steamed vegetables like sweet corn and beetroot,” said Symeou. “Our research and development department is working hard to add products like steamed carrots and steamed potatoes because our goal is to become the leader in the steamed vegetables market.”
But even with that ambition, the current economic situation poses challenges, not only on the consumer side, but also with getting fresh produce.
“We are certified under Global Gap, we control the whole process from raw materials to the final product” said Symeou. “We are concerned to keep the costs in the lower level from the raw materials (seeds) to the manufacturing process, the price of raw materials is increasing and that’s a threat to the competitive market”ended Symeou.
