US: New senior appointments at Delhaize and Supervalu

Delhaize and Supervalu have announced important changes to their respective senior management teams.

The Belgian grocer announced the appointment of Roland Smith as the new President and CEO of Delhaize America, effective 15 October. Smith is the former President and CEO of the fast food giant Wendy’s/Arby’s, and will succeed veteran Ronald Hodge.

The change comes after Hodge said he would retire later this year after a long career in retail. He will however remain as a consultant to Delhaize America through the transition.

Meanwhile, the struggling Supervalu chain named two new executives to help assist its new CEO in reviving the group. The third-largest US grocer has named Kevin Holt as President of Supervalu Retail, and Janel Haugarth as Executive VP of Business Optimisation and Process Improvement.

Holt, who was most recently EVP for Retail at Supervalu, will now be in charge of strategy for the company's retail and pharmacy divisions, including marketing and merchandising. Haugarth, who was EVP for Merchandising and Logistics, will now oversee Supervalu’s crucial efficiency and cost-cutting efforts.
