Spain: Tomato and courgette: the two sides of the coin
Agricultural production in the province of Almeria, Spain, has not seen major developments in terms of retail prices compared to previous years during the month of August. Nevertheless, the value reached by tomatoes and the price of courgettes during the entire month have both been a surprise.
These products represent two extremes, one in the positive and the other in the negative side. Francisca Iglesias, general secretary of Almeria's Small Growers Union, affirms that "we did not expect, given the way the spring season developed, that the prices for the great majority of products would remain stable, and in the case of tomatoes, that the prices set would be acceptable."
About this perception, Manuel Arévalo, commercial director at Nature Choice, explained that "tomato retail prices, considering the stage of the season we are in, have already covered production costs at the very least, as tomatoes have sold for over 0.50 Euro and the cherry tomatoes has surpassed the Euro per kilo." According to Andrés Góngora, provincial secretary of Coag Almeria, this shows that the product "has been profitable for producers during the month of August."
Courgettes, on the other hand, have not shown any improvement. "August started with prices that did not even cover production costs and they have stayed the same throughout the whole month," says Andrés Góngora. "This product's market is very competitive due to it being largely supplied at this time of the year," assures Góngora. Courgette prices have remained under 0.25 Euro on average during the month of August. Only in the last week did it rise above 0.35 Euro per kilo.
