US: South Dakota promoting fruit and veg with TV airtime

South Dakota has been cited as having the lowest vegetable intake in the country. As a response to this the state's Health Department has commissioned a new TV advert aimed at encouraging people to eat more fresh produce.

"South Dakota does very, very poorly on fruits and vegetables and on vegetables in particular," said Kristin Biskeborn, state nutritionist in Chamberlain.

The state is paying $24,000 for the "YUM" ad and air time, Biskeborn said. It’s part of a fund of about $172,000 the state has this year to spend on educational tools and other efforts to promote better health. The money is all from federal grants and foundations, none from the state general fund, she said. Last year’s budget was about $115,000.

Officials are hoping for a turnaround similar to drops in smoking rates. Teen smoking dropping from 44 percent in 1997 to 23 percent in 2009. The adult rate fell from 22.7 percent in 2003 to 15.4 percent.
