1,500 kg Tommies washed, sorted and squeezed
Netherlands: Gazpacho made from Tommies which don't meet quality standards
Not all snack tomatoes meet the high quality standards of Tommies. This means that some little tomatoes cannot be sold as Tommies. These are often donated to the food bank. However, it could be down to other things. That is why Tommies participated in the project 'Too good to waste (TGTW)'.
TGTW wants to prolong the durability of vegetables and fruit to reduce 'waste' and raise awareness amongst consumers. The goal of this project is to give supermarkets and suppliers a chance to make their vegetables and fruit available for additional processing into soups and juices. Tommies thinks this is a nice objective, and they are more than happy to cooperate. The TGTW team washed, sorted, and squeezed 1,500 kg of Tommies. These little tomatoes wouldn't have been packaged as Tommies as they don't meet the quality standards, but they will do just fine for the gazpacho that is on the menu!
It took some effort to create a delicious gazpacho. Bottles filled with the cold tomato soup will be launched at the Floriade on August 28th. In the weekend of September 1st, some will be handed out at the Plus supermarket in Rozenburg, and shoppers in the cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam will also be provided with a delicious, cold gazpacho.
There is still a question whether there really is a market for it, but it would be wonderful!
