Brazil: Grupo Real optimistic about current melon season

The Real Group/Grupo Real is an organisation composed of growers marketing their produce on both domestic and international markets. Within the group are 4 companies; Agro Oriente, CY Matsumoto/CTM Agricola, Jiem Agricola and Cris Frutas. They are based in Brazil and provide employment to around 1,000 people and, indirectly around as many as 3,000.

The group produces a range of fruits, including mango, papaya and bananas for the domestic market, but the focus is on the cultivation and commercialisation of melons. The group, taken as a whole, produces yellow honeydew - their main product, galia, piel de sapo, canteloupe and both seeded and seedless watermelon. All produce is grown according to both local and internationally recognised accreditations, including Global GAP, GMP and TNC.

The group's main export market is the European Economic Area, which accounts for 60% of foreign sales. The produce is shipped to the Netherlands, the UK, Denmark and Spain. From ports of entry in those countries it is distributed across the wider European area.

Reriton Moura, from Grupo Real, says that the group has identified that there may also be market opportunities in both North and South America.

Currently the Group exports in the region of 1200 containers of melons per season and this year look promising at the time of writing.

Reriton says that the group is expecting a good season this year, having already taken good orders for watermelons.

"The general feeling is one of optimism in the group," he said. "The first containers were already loaded this week and demand is good for galia, cantaloupe as well as watermelons.

"We believe this has to do with the weather, but also with the good varieties we produce and the quality that people have seen in previous seasons, especially last year.

"Predictions are for a good season with both high demand and yields."
