Report on ISAAQ DAY 2012
Mauro Grossi, CIV's president, started the information day explaining the collaboration CIV - KIKU: “The Braun brothers are well known in the industry for the introduction of the premium brand KIKU. Generally the Brauns are known for their professional way of introducing new strains and varieties on a global market. Well, the obvious presence of know how in the evaluation and launch of new varieties on a global level led us at CIV to the decision to trust the Brauns for ISAAQ.”
More than 30 persons from 5 European countries attended the ISAAQ DAY 2012.
Jürgen Braun, CEO of KIKU from Girlan, Italy stated: “ISAAQ is a very attractive project with CIV: 2 companies have decided to collaborate for the introduction of a very promising apple, 2 leading companies in the industry, with the aim to maximise the value of ISAAQ for the complete supply chain, starting right from the producer. Therefore, we will take the right time for the formulation of a strategy for the commercial launch of ISAAQ. For sure, the variety will not be nursery driven, this means not dictated by the production of trees in the nurseries. We are thinking about coordinated sales and a natural approach: as ISAAQ's fruit size is similar to Gala, we don't want to find methods to increase the size. For years now we have been actively searching for a snack apple, compact with great taste. We are incorporating in our strategy several trends and facts: singles and small families looking for small packagings, canteens looking for small apples/portions, athletes looking for a natural snack. We want to introduce ISAAQ with a new packaging taking into account all these trends and facts.”
Alessio Martinelli of CIV presented the variety CIV323 in the various test blocks of CIV in Comacchio: “ISAAQ CIV323 has an attractive appearance due to its vivid red overcolour, and shows good storage properties. It is a scab resistant variety, in fact in CIV's blocks we distinguish conventional production and so-called “no sprays”. ISAAQ CIV323 is, due to at least 2 reasons, a very interesting variety for the producer: it is very productive and the harvesting period is roughly 2 weeks after Gala.”
Participants at the event had the chance to appreciate the excellence and the potential of ISAAQ in further test blocks at Lake Garda near Verona, and in Mezzocorona (Trento) – it looks the same in all testing blocks.

Braun concludes: “ISAAQ has a big potential as it shows a marvellous eating quality, is crunchy and juicy. In the next months we will present ISAAQ at various fairs, starting with Interpoma in Bolzano (South Tyrol/ Italy) in November 2012. We will also present this apple at Fruit Logistica Berlin in February 2013, which is another 'must-attend event' for any interested party.”
