Musical cucumber grows to giant length

A green-fingered shopkeeper says the secret of a whopping cucumber is that it "grows to music".

Parbat Halai, 53, reckons the 28-inch long veg is aided by him playing traditional Indian temple sounds in his greenhouse.

And grandad Parbat says the salad item gained extra length because it is never lonely - as he leaves the radio on when he's not around.

He has seen his pale-green cucumber grow from a seed to over two-feet long in just four months at his home in Grangetown, Cardiff.

He said: “I always talk or leave the radio on to let the plant know that somebody’s there.

“I also always sit out in the greenhouse and play music.

“I just play the radio or Indian songs. It likes temple songs.”
