Romania: Canned vegetables production reduced dramatically

Romanian producers of canned vegetables and fruit have to reduce their production volumes and use only one third of their actual capacities. The reason for such a reduction is the low crops yeild this year due to heavy drought which occurred in the country. This information was reported by UKRINFORM basing on the words of Aurel Tenase, the Chairman of Romanian Canned Products Protectorship (Romconserv).

"The shortage of raw material –vegetables and fruit- forces the producers to cut their production capacities. Some of the producers import the raw material from Bulgaria and Macedonia", explained Mr. Tenase.

He also adds, that the reduction of canned food production is visible from the fact that selling volumes of Romania's biggest can supplier Stirom fell dramatically, and at the moment comprises of only half of its regular selling volumes.

According to preliminary data, the production volumes for canned food are expected to be 160,000 tons this year, which is also only half of the last year figure.
