KG Fruit's focus is on growing and marketing kiwi-berries:

"Netherlands: "Volume of kiwi berries is becoming larger every year"

The kiwi-berry is virtually unknown by consumers. KG Fruit wants to change that. The young company based in Kapelle was started by Domus de Jonge at the end of 2010 and is specialised in the cultivation of the kiwi-berry. KG is short for Kapels Gold and is one of the few companies in the Netherlands that grows on an extremely large scale and markets the product as well.

Waiting on production

“We started working together with the Faculty of Applied Bioscience Engineering from Gent University, recognised specialists when it comes to the growth of kiwi-berries, around three years ago and researched the possibility of growing these in Zeeland. Soil analysis, choice of variety, cutting techniques and brain storm sessions were the result. Once the plants were in the ground, it was all about waiting for production which would take a few years before showing results. We expect between 3,000 and 5,000 kilo this year which is a considerably largest harvest than last year," tells Leo Lagendijk who is responsible for sales and business development.

"The volume of kiwi-berries doubles every year and over the course of time even triples. This season we harvested primarily the plants that we planted two years ago. In addition, we planted 3,000 new plants in May. This means good prospects for the years to come. We are going to start picking different varieties in a week or two and the kiwi-berries should be on the shelves by the third week of September. We've tested many varieties and in the end only two or three will remain as they are the best choice for our climate and the tastes of the consumer."

Cultivation and marketing

KG Fruit feels that it is important not only to cultivate, but also to market the kiwi-berries themselves. "We want to be in control of the various links in the chain ourselves. Last year we distributed the kiwi-berries via BPF (Business Partners in Fresh). The berries were sold by specialty fruit and vegetable businesses who became responsible. The greatest portion is also going via BPF this year. That is our most important buyer. By sampling this year we can also let other target groups get to know the kiwi-berry. There is a lot of interest for this relatively new fruit. The kiwi-berry will be offered in new packaging this year. It will be a trendy, square, and transparent container with an insert with clear information."

In order to ensure that consumers get more familiar the kiwi-berry, KG Fruit is going to make sure that people from their growing company will visit certain events. They recently were at a cycling tour and we are often on the road to promote our product. "This fruit, next to having amazing health benefits, also has a deliciously sweet flavour. It is a good source of vitamins and untreated which makes it an honest and delicious in it's simplicity. On top of that, the kiwi-berry contains 3 sugars instead of the 2 contained in most fruits, not to mention the number of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You only need to have around four of the berries in order be be back to full energy levels after an intensive session at the gym. Pretty much everyone is positive and this will also be communicated to retailers, speciality stores and the catering industry."

Labour intensive

The company is still in the pioneering phases. "We won't really be able to talk about really large volumes until next year. When it comes to cultivation, harvest and the area of distribution, there is still a long way to go. Picking, sorting and packing are very labour intensive. There are still gains to be made in terms of efficiency. By moving forward a little each time, we expect to be able to deliver everything that the customer would want in around 2 to 3 years. We do need to realise that the season is short. This summer fruit is available from the middle of September to the middle of December. That is, as long as stocks last."

"Alongside kiwi-berries, KG Fruit also grows the apple variety called the Maribelle. This is marketed under the name Lola. This is a new variety that has been developed by crossing the Gloster and MayPrincess with the Elstar. It's a hard apple that has a fresh flavour with an exceptionally pink colour which has a long shelf life. An apple unlike any other."
