Russia: Melons exceed acceptable nitrate levels

X5 Retail Group point out that almost 40% of melons and water melons, which are sent by their suppliers for sale in the Moscow Region, exceed the normally acceptable content of nitrates.

X5 reports that, recently the volume of melons and water melons which are supplied with a nitrate content far exceeding the acceptable limits became extremely high.

From August 6 to 12, the potential suppliers offered to X5 1,256 million kilograms melons and water melons. The distribution centers of the Group refused 488.9 thousand kilograms because the detected nitrates content was far beyond the acceptable value.

For example, nitrates content detected in the lot of torpedo melon were 800 mg/kg, 732 mg/kg and 679 mg/kg, instead of top acceptable level of 90 mg/kg.
