UK: Total Cherry & Chelan Fresh set for a record season

Total Cherry (the trading name for Total Worldfresh & T&JB Produce), one of the largest handlers of cherries in the UK are set for a record year with Washington State exporter Chelan Fresh, who are one of the largest packers not only from the area, but in the world. Chelan Fresh will handle a volume heading in the direction of 3.5million 9kg cartons this year, a volume which is around 50% more than the entire consumption in the UK for a whole year!

Through the course of the season representatives from Chelan will be seeing the arrivals in the UK, and this week Tom Riggan (right) and Johnny Gebbers (left) made the trip over to see the latest arrivals, both were very pleased with the quality of the fruit inspected and also had a chance to see first hand the quality improvement test pallets shipped.

Riggan said, “we have been working with Total Cherry/T&JB Produce for a number of years and are delighted how the partnership has developed with these guys for business here and in Europe. We have made a significant investment in extending the season as we see that as being vital for the changing UK & global marketplace in line with our own production. Over the last few years we have seen improvements, and this year that has continued. With the visits and data recording this year we are confident we can take it to another level next year.”

Jon Clark of Total Cherry added “we are proud to have an exporter like Chelan Fresh in the Total Cherry family, their commitment to look at the export market in the detail required to be successful is commendable and allows us the platform to build a mutually beneficial business. It was not only great for Tom & Johnny to see their own fruit, but also to have the opportunity to look at the UK orchards and fruit and discuss different production techniques with those growers.

The Washington cherry season should run with sales until late in to September.
