Still 450 tons of organic apples in Switzerland
Bio Suisse and Swisscofel mention that about 450 tons of organic eating apples are available on the market, a relatively high number. Sales, however, are doing well. The stock of eating apples on 31 July amounted to 450 tons, much higher than the average of the last four years. In August the stock in general is a lot smaller with the exception of 2008 when at this time 376 tons were still available.
The most important varieties are just about finished. The following apple varieties are still available: Premium (211 tons), other varieties (125 tons), Golden Delicious (51 tons), Idared (44 tons) and Jonagold (11 tons).
The best sold apples are Maigold (42 tons), Golden Delicious (34 tons) and Gala (25 tons) followed by Premium and other varieties with 103 tons.
For the August harvest of this year the yield in apples is estimated at about 124 tons and the pear harvest at 60 tons.
