Dominican Republic increasing banana production and exports

Banana production and exports continue to rise in the Dominican Republic.

The banana sector is of vital importance for the country's economy. The Dominican Republic is one of the main providers of the fruit to the Caribbean and the main producer of bio-bananas.

Banana exports have generated 650 million dollars over the past eight years, said the Minister of Agriculture. This figure was reached with the export of 1,798,000 tonnes of bananas, shipped mainly to the US and Europe. According to the Ministry, the banana sector generates 25,000 direct jobs and gives sustenance to over 300,000 people in the Dominican Republic, a country of just 10 million inhabitants.
