Austria: Spar and Rewe increase their market share

Austrian retailers Rewe and Spar have managed to expand their market share in the last year, according to branch magazine “Key Account”. Rewe’s share increased from 0.3% to a formidable 34.9%. Its competitor, Spar, went from 0.4% to 29.6%.

For discounters however, times are not so prodigious. Discounter Hofer lost for the third year in a row. 2011 saw a 0.2% decline, falling to 19.1%. Likewise, Markant (-0.3%) and Zielpunkt (-0.1%) felt the pressures of competition. The only one to remain steady was Lidl, stagnating with 4.1%.
