Mexico loses the lead in pineapple exports

Choosing the right variety of a crop can be a determining factor to gain access to the export market, and in the case of Mexican pineapples that was the key to losing the lead in sales to the US market.

While 30 years ago Mexico was the largest pineapple supplier in the United States, with 60% of the US market, nowadays it has gone down to 12%. This is due to failing to choose the right variety of the product, producers point out.

Traditionally the country produced the Cayenne variety; however, when the MD-2 variety, also known as Honey Gold, was developed in the 80's, demand migrated towards it due to its longer shelf life and better nutritional values and taste, producers said.
