AU: NSW citrus growers hope for Victorian fruit fly help

Citrus growers in the Sunraysia region say they hope Victorian officials could help to control fruit fly across the border in NSW if asked.

The Balranald Shire is criticising the NSW Government for what it says is a lack of help to control the pest after an outbreak in the area last summer.

Hugh Flett, from the Murray Valley Citrus Board, says his group's been asked to help to see if it can make a difference.

"The concern for us is that Balranald is right on the border of the pest-free area, and as such it is a gateway into the Sunraysia Pest-free Area, and it's a concern they've got the fly numbers that they're indicating that they do."

The Victorian Government also says it's yet to be approached by the Balranald Shire, but will continue to work with NSW on a regional fruit fly strategy.
