Canada: Jealous Fruits Sweetheart harvest has begun!

Jealous Fruits has now started their 2012 Sweetheart harvest, and the team is very pleased with this season's fruit. They report that they are peaking on 9.5 row with lots of 9 and 10 row as well. They are packing only a limited volume of 8.5 row Sweetheart at present, though they expect that portion to climb again with movement into Staccatos mid month.

The Sweethearts are averaging 18 to 19 brix at present, and this is expected to rise as harvest progresses. The Firmtech results on the Sweetheart are averaging 450 to 480, which equates to "spectacular" on the bite test scale!

Jealous Fruits say they have upped their game on the QA front this season, with a more proactive and detailed analysis of cherries on an orchard by orchard basis, starting several days preharvest and continuing through to delivery at the plant. This timely information allows them to best schedule the harvest based on objective data involving sugars, sizing and firmness, tailoring it to customers' needs.

Ms. Janine Pharo is new to Jealous Fruits this season, in the role of QA manager. Janine holds a degree in food processing technology, and has many years management experience in food manufacturing facilities. As part of her broad background, Janine is well versed in the traceability and food safety requirements of today's world. Jealous Fruits say that Janine is proving to be a huge asset, and they are very proud to have her as part of the team.

The Okanagan Valley weather outlook for the next week is for sunny days, with daytime temperatures in the range of 28 to 31 C, and night time temperatures in the 11 to 14C range. With the onset of longer nights, the nighttime "refrigerator effect" is starting to kick in, providing that perfect temperature environment that late season cherries love. Temperatures are a key factor in producing strong crunchy cherries. Strong full supplies of fresh picked cherries are anticipated through to September 3rd, with the last week of harvest being Staccatos and Sovereigns from the high elevation Cholla Hills farm.
