Italian kiwi producers form consortium
The consortium consists of 9 of the main Italian companies in the industry - Spreafico, Naturitalia, Salvi-UNACOA, Granfrutta Zani, Frutta C2, Orogel Fresco, PempaCorer-Terremerse, Minguzzi, Consorzio Kiwigold - The Consortium represents more than 1 million tons of Hayward kiwifruit, representing over 20% of Italian production, but the intention of the founders is to grow further and faster, opening the door so that the best producers and exporters can meet the requirements.
In addition to promoting, protecting and enhancing the production and marketing of Italian kiwi at national, EU and worldwide levels, the Consortium will cover other important functions, such as the realization of innovative research and development, dissemination, information and training.
"The main objectives of this new reality - said the president, Alessandro Fornari (Consorzio Kiwigold) - are, on the one hand, the definition of common minimum standards of quality for the production and marketing of kiwifruit to increase the quality and constantly improve the image to customers and consumers and, secondly, the coordination of commercial and promotional campaigns mainly addressing new markets and countries overseas. Everything - continues Fornari - in order to increase the value of Italian kiwi and maximize the economic return for producers, rising world production of kiwifruit and the general stagnation of consumption are factors that determine a worrying decline in prices at the source."
The President continued, "compliance with strict and effective controls can provide high quality fruit, 'marked' by a specific brand. Another level on which the Consortium will act to 'conquer' new markets will be the Italian origin of the product, ensuring uniqueness thanks to the outstanding suitability of our country for this species of fruit."
