Peru: Agricultural exports to Korea up 86%

"Eleven months after the Free Trade Agreement was signed between Peru and Korea our non-traditional exports to this destination are up 23%," mentioned Juan Varilias, president of the Exporters Association (ADEX).

Within the framework of the creation of the Peruvian-Korean Business Council, the executive pointed out that the value of exports reached US$ 79.6 million, due to larger shipments of agricultural products, which saw a 86% increase, clothing (26%), fishing for direct human consumption (25%); others (39%).

Additionally, he confirmed that total exports to South Korea grew 8% during this same period, totalling US$ 1,288 million, not including natural gas shipments, which months before the treaty was signed already amounted to US$ 267 million.
Similarly, he highlighted that Korea is their third largest trading partner in Asia and eighth worldwide, since in the past 10 years, annual exports have increased from 14% to 29% on average, taking into account that all shipments to Asia grew 27% and 22% to the rest of the world.

Business Council
Within this context, the president of the Exporters Association assured that the creation of the Business Council will strengthen and promote trading between both countries.

"Although we must keep trading agreements with our traditional partners, we must also trade in other parts of the world. Finding new destinations for our products is a priority, and the Korean market has lots of potential," he said.

It is worth highlighting that the Council will be chaired by Juan Varilias Velásquez, Executive President of ADEX and General Manager of the firm Gandules S.A.C., while Tae Won Kim, President of SK Innovation, and José Boluarte, legal representative of Complejo Salamanco S.A.C, will be the Vice-presidents.
