Ukraine: One of Europe's biggest greenhouse complexes to open in Ternopol

In the Sinkov countryside of the Ternopol Region the project of a modern greenhouse complex has reached its final stage. The greenhouse complex will be among the top-five biggest production facilities of Ukraine and will become one of the biggest greenhouse areas in Europe. The official opening is planned for September, 2012.

The greenhouse complex already has a contract for growing vegetables. This information was announced by the Minister of Agricultural Policy, Nikolay Prisyazhnyuk, during his protocol trip to Ternopol Region on August 3.

“Looking at the greenhouse complex under construction, we can already see that it will be one of the biggest complexes not only in Ukraine but in Europe also. There are a lot of favourable factors for growing vegetables in our country. First of all, there are 46 million of consumers and neighbouring markets, taking into account eastern markets too, where vegetables are very popular. Secondly, our geographical location allows us to export the products from inside the country to a lot of other markets abroad,” the Minister remarked.

Prisyazhnyuk highlighted that the greenhouse complex in Sinkov will produce 4,000 tons of tomatoes and 1,500 tons of pepper annually. Hence, the import of pepper can be reduced by 20%.

“Construction of such facilities proves that the task of the Prime-Minister to minimize the import of vegetables, and to be export-oriented is being fulfilled,” the Minister emphasized.

On the whole, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy forecasts the potential increase of greenhouse areas from 420Ha, which currently exist, to 1000 Ha in the next few years.
