India: West Bengal concerned over fruit price rises

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has asked both the agricultural marketing and police authorities to investigate the cause of spiralling fruit and vegetables prices. the worst hit products are apple, papaya, mango and cucumber.

The Minister noted that there was an in inexplicable gap between the wholesale and retail prices.

At the same time the Bengal state government has decided to cease sale of potatoes to other states for the time being, to ensure that there are sufficient local supplies to maintain affordable prices.

The task force between te police and marketing authorities was formed last month as prices of fresh produce rose. Since this vegetable prices have come down somewhat, but potato continues to sit at Rs 15-16 per kg.

Ordinarily potatoes from Bengal are sold to states including Odhisa, Bihar, Jharkhand, and other northeastern states like Assam and so on.
