Russia: Quarantined produce crossing border

The Federal Phytosanitary Monitoring Service can apply additional protective measures for the import of vegetable products carried by passengers and contained in their luggage. If introduced, these measures will concern only passengers from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, as the Federal Phytosanitary Monitoring Service states.

It was detected that, in disregard of the temporary limitations introduced on 16 April concerning import of products which are listed as quarantined, products are still being imported in luggage of passengers. The volumes of the forbidden products even increased.

"Thus, from April 16 to July 8,166 tons of forbidden vegetables and fruits and over 18 thousand nursery plants of ornamental and fruit varieties were confiscated from passengers arriving from the above mentioned counties and from their luggage. In 340 cases 6 types of objects which are under quarantine in Russia were detected," according to the report.

Particular concern is caused by the fact that some types of the objects which fall under quarantine procedures cannot be originally present in the territory of the above countries, but they still arrive to Russia through these countries.

Due to the current situation Federal Phytosanitary Monitoring Service of Russia has sent an appeal to the Quarantine and Plant Protection Services of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan.
