New markets for Pakistan's mangoes

Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) appears to have opened up the South Korean market for Pakistani mangoes. The initial consignment of 2.5 tons went to the country in early July and lead to further orders of 22 tons.

"PHDEC worked closely with DPP-Pakistan for opening up of South Korean market for Pakistani mangoes. The company arranged a visit of South Korean Quarantine experts to Pakistan and facilitated meetings with allied institutions for this visit," said PHDEC Chief Executive Officer Bashir Hussein.

Bashir said that the company had also finalised paperwork to apply for exporting mangoes to Australia. As a result an Australian delegation comprising of Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Biosecurity experts visited Pakistan from May 28 to June 4, 2012, he added.

A sea shipment has also reached the Netherlands this month and it seems that this method of transportation will prove favourable in reducing costs and allow for bulk exports.

The shipping takes 26 days and reports are that the fruit was in good condition upon arrival.
