Colombia: High volumes of Passion Fruit and low demand in Europe

At the moment, Colombia is producing Passion Fruit in great volumes, which according to exporters, "is problematic, because Passion Fruit sales are bad during the European summer." Currently supply is greater than demand, making prices of this exotic fruit quite low.

Just like Physalis (Cape gooseberry), the best season for Passion Fruit commercialization in Europe is before Christmas and Easter. Between week 49 and 51 the best prices are registered and Passion Fruit demand is high in the continent.

Passion Fruit, exotic fruit

Passion Fruits enter Europe through the Netherlands, where they are popular. Other European countries with good consumption levels are Germany, Belgium and France.

According to Jorge Vargas, from Frutas Comerciales S.A., the climate this year has been much better than in the previous two. "As long as rains and sunshine alternate, everything will be fine," affirms Vargas.

In general, Passion Fruit exporters expect international shipments to rise this year. Although it is not high season yet for the product, their expectations this year are very good.
