Spain: Board calls for participation of the horticultural sector to meeting in Hungary and Poland

Extenda - Andalucian Agency for External Promotion, an entity depending on the Council of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment called up to the participation of the Andalucian horticultural sector in the next commercial meeting with importers and distributors from Hungary and Poland. The meeting will take place between 1 and 5 of October, in Budapest and Warsaw.

The objectives of this action is to introduce themselves in the reference markets, launch new products or services and widen contacts. For that, it's planned the organization of bilateral meetings between importers and and the participating Andalucian companies, along with a market research in Hungary and Poland, trough visits to selling points and local markets of fruits and vegetables.

Horticultural exports from Andalucia

According to notes by Extenda, Andalucia was the second autonomous community in horticultural exports to the world in 2011, with 3,041 million Euro, 32.2% of the national totals, only after the Valencia Community. During the first three months of 2012, Andalucia was already in the first place, thanks to the 1,570 million Euro sold, 38.6% of the total and 8.7% more than in the same period of the previous year.

The main destination for the horticultural products from Andalucia in 2011 were Germany, with 27.4% of the total and a 5.5% growth regarding 2010; followed by France (17.8%), United Kingdom (12.1%), the Netherlands (11.9%) and Italy (6.7%). On the other hand, the provinces that exported the most products last year were Almería with 56.1% of the total; Huelva with 19.2% (and a raise of 9.9% regarding 2010); and Granada with 7.2%.


Meeting markets

Andalucía takes the second place in the export ranking of horticultural products to Hungary and Poland. In the first case, the sales of 2011 represent 19.2% of the national totals and grew 4.2% regarding 2010. In the second case, the exports of the community were 21.6% of the total in 2011 and grew 17.5%. This numbers place Poland as the 8th destination with 2.8% of the total sales of 2011 and 3.2% o the exports in the first three months of 2012.

The most exported horticultural products last year to Hungary were fresh or frozen tomato (33.1%), cucumbers and pickles fresh and frozen (18.6%); and other fresh or frozen vegetables (18.5%), among which are artichokes, asparagus and eggplants.

On the other hand, the most sold products to Poland in 2011 were fresh or frozen tomato (40.8%); other vegetables (23.4%); cucumbers and pickles, fresh or refrigerated (11%).


Hungary and Poland: horticultural sector

Andalucia keeps on showing, year after year, that they are a steady supplier of horticultural products to Hungary. Regarding vegetables, Andalucia kept its leading position in 2011 among the Spanish autonomous communities. About 35% of the Spanish exports come from Andalucia. Regarding fruits, Andalucia reinforced its position among the first exporters to Hungary. In 2011, fruit sales to the reference country grew more than 40% regarding the yer before.

The fruit and vegetables market in Poland is marked by the weather conditions in the country, causing production costs to go higher during Autumn and Winter. In 2011, 27% of the fruit imported by Poland came from Spain and exports from Andalucia represented 6.2% of the total. Regarding vegetables, since 2006 there's an ongoing growth on sales, reaching in 2011 a quota of 49% of the total Spanish exports.
