Four years ago Valstar Holland introduced sweet potatoes under hallmark 'Discovered' into the European market. "At the beginning of May the first sweet potatoes were planted again in the United States and in the middle of August harvesting will start again, so that the potatoes will be available on the European market at the end of September" Edwin van Leeuwen says. "Sufficient old stock will be available till then. Quality wise these are still very good. We do not expect any problems this year for the seasons to move nicely from the one to the other and to supply clients with the same variety of potatoes all year round. This remains one of the strong points of the American sweet potato!"
During the last few weeks sales of the sweet potatoes were a little difficult, also because a lot of product from Honduras was still on the market and normally that should not be the case. "Luckily many clients have the United States in their program all year round and therefore very often enjoy preference" Edwin van Leeuwen continues. "As far as prices are concerned the season started high, but the price decreased a little because of the good harvest and the large availability

The most important buyers of sweet potatoes are all over Europe. "We did a lot of promotions on the shop floor again this year. All in all the sweet potato remains the unknown on the shelf and there is still a lot to be learned by the consumer. Our Discovered hallmark assists the consumer with information about the origin, applications and food value. The sweet potato under hallmark 'Discovered' does a little more for the consumer than a different hallmark!
