Germany: Blueberry harvest in Niedersachsen

The harvest of blueberries has started in the German state Niedersaschsen, slightly earlier than in 2011. Sufficient moisture and no damaging periods of cold helped the early start, said the agricultural organisation Landvolk from Niedersachsen last Monday in Hannover. Due to the partially icy temperatures and dead shoots a record harvest like in 2009 is not to be expected. In that year over 12,000 tonnes of blueberries were harvested in the whole of Germany. Niedersaschen has the largest cultivation area for blueberries in Germany, at 1,000 hectares.
